"In the 1830s, the whaling station founded by the Weller brothers on Otago Harbour in New Zealand had developed into a provision center, with ships sailing daily to supply the local whalers at sea. The anticipation for goods such as sugar, tea and rum, gave birth to sea shanties, sung by whalers hoping for a Weller crew arriving soon. The men on these crews became known as "Wellermen".
But the whalers weren't the only ones longing for their arrival. The Wellermen wives used to spend every day not knowing whether their husbands would return home safe. For the sea is a worthy ally and a relentless enemy... So they prayed. A prayer disguised as music. They prayed like tender sirens, from dawn till sunset, hoping that the silhouette of a ship would appear in the horizon..."
